Linden Lab Issue ID: DEV-2986

 Description  « Hide
Trying to file an Abuse report is IMPOSSIBLE if the person that created the item. Deletes or removes the account they launch an item from.

Tried reporting a self replicating object at Taber 217,226,30 the name of the Avatar that create it would not come up in Search or was a deleted account. Was NO way to file the abuse report to include the person's name. The name was Itstheend Babii

Person's name comes up in Profile but NOT in search, which IS required to file a report.

The requirement makes filling out a report TOTALLY IMPOSSIBLE!!

This is a pretty Impossible situation if you cannot contact Live Help now to remove these items.

The landowner in this case is RENTING from a group and could NOT remove any of the object on HER LAND or the others surrounding her land where the offending objects were originating at.

If you are going to remove LIVEHELP you need to make sure folks have a way to file a abuse report with out having to pull a SEARCH to file one. This will be a major issue.

---------------------

Addition to the above. When an account is banned, they do not appear in people search, or the person chooser.

This causes problems for a few things.

1. Abuse reports. This requires the person chooser. This is largely irelevant, as there's no point in reporting an account that's already banned.

[Edit to the above] This can potentially become a harmful and prolific tactic to get away with copying content through alternate accounts, avoiding abuse report in time, rendering it useless to track down their main or other accounts by LL.

2. Muting. Far more serious, most of those who get banned nowadays are for spamming permission requests and/or particles. Muting the offender is the only defence against these types of attacks. Without the ability to search them, though, this can only be accomplished via finding an object of theirs, and opening their profile through the pie menu. If the object is small and invisible, or if your UI is locked up by permission dialogs when you get within visual range, this is nigh impossible.

3. Banning. Even if an account is banned from SL, banning them from your land still has it's uses. It prevents entry of their objects, without impeding anyone else.

I think the best solution would be to allow disabled accounts to still appear in the person chooser, and allow the person chooser to be used for muting avatars.

To clarify here, we (Linden Lab) also put accounts on hold or disable them for a number of reasons, including abuse.

There is currently no such thing as Live Help, which was later renamed to Help Request.

Abuse reports can still be filed from inworld.

I'll reword this a bit and link it to an internal issue...

It would be nice if we could easily file ARs on suspended/banned accounts.
Failing that, it would be nice if attempting to do so produced an error (e.g. "that account is on hold, please try later", or "that account is already banned") so that people knew they at least got the name right.
I understand if you don't want to do this for privacy reasons. In that case, it might be good to add a little text to the abuse report name-selector : "note that accounts already on hold will not show up here".

Closing this issue. Duplicate of SVC-572.

Alexa, SVC-572 is a vague issue about a possible exploit. This is about accounts getting banned.

SVC 572 also mentions the offender causing trouble while not showing in search. indicating that they can't have been banned at the time.

Therefore, this issue is not a duplicate of SVC 572. I'm reopening it, as it's the best existing issue I can find for the problem of banned accounts not showing in the person chooser.

and given I can't ban Gene Replacement from my sandbox, it's safe to say this is still an issue

The issue here is that suspended or inactive accounts don't show in search. Here's a scenario where this can be a problem:

1. Griefer launches a grid attack of incredibly offensive objects.
2. Griefer either closes their account or LL suspends them to investigate.
3. Griefer's name no longer appears in search, so: a) Landowners now no longer have the ability to send an abuse report ,and b) can't even block the offensive objects by applying a ban.

This is a very common scenario on the mainland, especially near the sandboxes.

Yesterday, me and several others had our content stolen. I do not know exactly the extent of that, but in my case, what I could see was that the abuser (arnauld Omuzi) basically became me (Copybot? Cryolife?) assuming my shape and all textures (skin and clothing) I had on, except for prims.
I filled an abuse report in time, however others couldn't. He or she,had already deleted the account and people couldn't send an abuse report due to not being able to find in search his or her name.
This is a clever tactic. Use an alternative account to copy content, most likely keeping the content in .xml in the hard drive (then importing it into SL, which was what this person did) or sending it off to another account and then deleting it once the job is done to make it impossible to be reported.
I've upped the priority on this to critical, because as i've stated in the edit I did above on the description, if this becomes profilic, there's no way of investigating abusers of this type.
