    • This award is for a person who significantly contributed to the open source viewer effort – from the community of C++ developers working on the viewer code base and those who directly support that effort. **

This award honors a person who, in any number of ways, exemplifies the open source community values of collegiality and mutual respect and calls others to be their best. Over the last year, this person's presence will have significantly improved the quality of the open source community.

Jesse Malthus (d. 2007) was an open source community member who had a knack for making the open source project feel like a great neighborhood to live in. Jesse seemed to always stay above the fray, and when a heated debate was running amok, he would interject a humorous comment to diffuse the situation. His family graciously gave us permission to offer this award in Jesse's name.

When making a nomination, please be sure to write a comment about what their contribution was and why you find it to be exemplary.
  • Be sure to cite jira issues, wiki pages or other examples of the contribution wherever possible.

The judges had their first meeting a couple of days ago, of which I'm one of the panelists, and Liana is chair. One thing we looked at was the fact that the descriptions for many nominees did not match the category, as if the person nominating maybe made a mistake in filing.

So, we had two choices. We could have slavishly adhered to the exact nomination process, and said "tough, wait until next year". Or, we could have done what we're doing, which was to make sure that we considered the existing nominees for the categories they are most suited for. We all felt like it was more important that we get the end result right than it was to rely exclusively on an imperfect process.

There were no new nominees added to overall pool, but Liana has copied a few nominations to other categories as appropriate. If anyone can come up with a better way of making things right, I'm happy to see the suggestion made here, but right now, I stand by this decision.

I think the original nominations should stand. Throwing new names into mix after closing is not the way. In hindsight the deadline should have been extended if you did not approve of the original nominations.

This is like like not having enough entries in a contest so by adding 500 more tickets into the bowl the bowl looks full especially when a judge adds the names.

It appears the entire Hippo Awards process has now been compromised. I for one knowing the judges are the ones adding new names "to other categories", even if they vote fairly, the whole process has now been tainted and the end results will not be believable.

Even if this was rolled back to before the addition of nominees the integrity of the judging panel has been lost.

What a sad situation for all of the Hippo Awards.

I have a hard time seeing how this amounts to rigging. This has always been a Linden-judged event, and if you look at the list of nominations for this award, you'll find that most of the nominations were made by Lindens. If you'd like, you can make your own awards, with your own nomination and jurying rules. Please don't ruin this one for those of us who have been nominated, by smearing the event with baseless cries that it is rigged.
