Linden Lab Issue ID: DEV-18456

 Description  « Hide
(reference: see http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/04/11/protecting-your-copyrighted-content/, posts #17 and #88)

Linden Lab says:

"If you believe that a Resident has used CopyBot (or a similar application) to make infringing copies of your content, please file an abuse report and provide as much information as you can to support your claim."

However, there seems to be a filter in the Abuse Report feature which _specifically_ scans for words such as 'CopyBot' and auto-rejects the Abuse Report. The person attempting to submit the Abuse Report is met with the following popup (screenshot attached):

"Dear Resident,

Reports about copyright infringement can only be submitted as described in http://secondlife.com/corporate/dmca.php.

Reports concerning copyright infringement will automatically be discarded if they are submitted through the 'Abuse Report' feature. If your report does not relate to copyright infringement, you may close this window and finish submitting your report.

Thank you,

Linden Lab"

We are told to 'Abuse Report Infringing Use of CopyBot', yet it is quite obvious that policy-as-expressed-in-code is specifically set up to disallow the very reporting we're being asked to perform.

LauraP Linden's response:

"Thanks for pointing this out. We will change this auto-response text. Claims that another Resident is using CopyBot to make infringing copies _should_ be submitted as abuse reports. Claims requesting removal of certain infringing content should be submitted through the DMCA process. I hope this explanation helps."

This pJIRA is a marker to ensure that the issue is a) seen by LL devs, and b) not lost. Please "change this autoresponse text" (actually, it should be removed altogether) as soon as possible. Thanks :)

there can be response text additionally reccomending use of the dmca process on this. but it should not stop the report on the person actively using copybot to steal from people from going through first.

Also... why is it that that filter and text was put there in the first place? I'd be very interested in the rationale for specifically disallowing reporting of a specific ToS violation.

I submitted another IP AR today ([rt.lindenlab.com #1237656] Abuse Report Received Abuse: E:1 P:1 |Lusk| (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Lusk/226/164/60) [Other] {<name redacted> "<name redacted>i - Infringing copies of Luskwood IP (sculpties)"), and I'm _still_ getting this message (more than 90 days after the JIRA entry was made, and it is still unassigned). We're also getting kickback from GTeam Lindens wrt submitting such ARs, pointing us to the DMCA. To LL; Yes, we KNOW about the DMCA. We also know that we're supposed to submit ARs, and that you're supposed to read them, evaluate them, and act upon them. Please, please folks - get on the same sheet of music over there!

Here's a screenshot showing the message.

Same deal here. Tried to abuse report distribution of these objects yesterday (which are clearly labeled as 'Luskwood' objects) - and within seconds after filing an abuse report, received a *personal reprimand from a linden* for doing so.

We have clarified, over and over with the GTeam and Linden Lab --- and it has been posted on the blog over and over, over the past few years, that *THESE ISSUES ARE ABUSE ISSUES --AS WELL-- AS DMCA ISSUES*.

I am aware of the DMCA, but according to all past clarification, this is an ABUSE issue ALSO.

M Linden has made comments recently about how important content and IP is to Second Life, but we're still getting this mixed message here.
