 Description  « Hide
With the introduction of H4, the build ceiling is now to be 4096m. This suggestion is to have a private island option to use the same build volume, but 4 times the ground surface area. Instead of having a 4096m height, restrict this island type to a 1024m height but make the ground area 512m x 512m.

This would be really helpful for places like race tracks, large ocean builds as well as large open spaces. LL could even charge more for this simulator type, since there is more "useful build area", without having additional overhead running costs.

This proposal would keep the current 15,000 simulator prim limit.

Since the simulator would have the same volume, it is not expected to create additional strain on resources.

Problem is the 256x256 horizontal plane is hard-coded in several difficult-to-change places in the viewer and comms protocols. Even Rob Linden has lamented this decision. Volume has nothing to do with it: the sky technically goes up a very very very long way, you just can't build all the way up, but prim limits are based on area, not volume. Pity, because I too would like private island sizes other than 256x256 (though still the same prim limit over the whole sim).

The bulk of this is already provided, once the new Land Store is in place, order four Open Spaces in a square. That square will be 512 x 512 and give you 15000 prims. It will actually be no more expensive than buying one full region of 256 x 256. That means that this request should be for the ability to turn those four Open Spaces into a single region to avoid region crossing issues and move all four regions onto a single processor core. I doubt however that that will happen, but no harm in requesting it.

Ahh, the good old 'low density sim' request. I remember this back on the old voting system, and always thought it was a good idea (for wide open nature spaces and the like). The Linden response was, if I remember right, "Unfortunately, this is pretty much impossible." I wasn't aware that open space sims could be purchased like that - it's nice to see they've made a workaround for everything but the sim crossing bit. Still not perfect for race tracks and the like, but better than nothing. Maybe sim crossing issues in vehicles aren't so bad now that we have Havok 4?

Aggregating multiple open space sims into one large virtual sim with no boundaries on one CPU would be quite impressive, and avoid all the network transfer of data when crossing sims, but I can't imagine it happening any time soon.

I don't think the max build height would need to be altered because of a change in the x & y dimensions.

I also think that this proposal is a possible solution to the current fuss over the price increase of OS sims. This type of sim could, in many cases replace OS sims. If LL's claim that workload and network issues with people travelling between OS sims is an issue then this could be solved with this propsal.

I can see an issue with how the grid could cope with 256x256 sims connecting to 512x512 sims though. If this is a difficult problem to solve then it could be gotten around by saying that only 512x512 sims can connect to other 5125x512 sims. We would end up with continents of 256s and separate continents of 512s but it's still better than nothing.

In the current climat, as this is a possible solution to the OS sim issue, I've raised the priority, hopefully it will get more attention.

these islands would not, technically, be a single region, maybe a group of 4 regions in a 2x2 grid? a region will never have a different size.

Someone on SLDEV mentioned if the servers could be guaranteed to share a single CPU/Server then they could have very fast region handoffs. If Openspaces were locked to a single CPU in sets of 4 it would also solve the problem of people affecting other people's openspaces.
