This is an extremely serious and disturbing issue.

I can verify ficticious people easily just by submitting a random name and random 7 digit drivers license number, and a random house number on any Australian street. The system is flawed and with the number of falsly verified people already, it needs to be removed or fixed and everyone reverified at least. I would rather we have verify by "payment info on file" alone as it has a higher success rate. Aristole is only harder to defeat than the "I am 18" checkbox by a dozen extra mouse clicks. I trust LL with my RL details just as much as I trust my ISP.
AFAIK the system is still in beta and therefore as in any beta system it's not ready and is still a candidate for improvements or removal or replacement.

There is a fundamental problem between verification and anonymity. You cannot at the same time prove who you are and remain anonymous, unless you use a trusted third party verification service.

In other words, you as a privacy minded person registers with the verification service and sufficiently proves your age, or whatever credentials are required. You do not tell them why you are registering. They give you a registration number.

Then you go to second life, and give that registration number, which they can then use to verify your status without giving Linden Labs your real name. That way neither end can connect your name with your activities.

Danielle makes an excellent point, and provides a good solution. As long as the verification service is trusted, I would prefer that over putting payment information on file with Linden Labs.
