 Description  « Hide
Since Second Life (Starting with version 1.23) admittedly contains Adult content as indicated in search and region ratings, it should contain features to keep underage players from accessing that content. Account verification is only partially effective in doing this for several reasons:

(1) A significant number of minors possess credit cards, and can therefore use the Payment Info method
(2) It is very difficult to prove the credentials submitted for age or payment belong to the person using the account.

Additional features for parental control of SL should be provided. These can include:

(1) Clear notification on registration, first login, and subsequent logins when maturity is set to adult that the service contains adult content.

(2) A separate parental lock feature that can be activated per computer which requires a different password than account logins. When locked, it would prevent changing maturity settings on any account on that computer.

(3) A nominal charge of $1.00 applied when placing payment information on file. This would notify a parent who's payment info was used.

(4) Provide an alternate method to confirm account verification. For example, when either age or payment info is submitted, send a paper mail confirmation with a code number to the matching home address, which must then be entered to complete the verification. This would help prevent "borrowing" an ID or credit card.

I think this would be a really useful and valuable feature. With the best will in the world there will always be flaws in the online age verification system and parents should be given the tools they need to protect their children independently of relying on a third party age verification system.

I hope very much that the jira is the right way to bring this matter to the attention of the people at Linden Labs.

the "nominal" charge could also be added to the account that is verified, who wouldn't like ~250 L$ as a gift for verifying?

Would the snailmail notification be automated? Would they be able to send to other countries without charging the account trying to verify? How big is Elvis Presley's mailbox?

The things that involve RL interaction thru routes other than the verification page and the client itself I think might botter some people who have privacy concerns though.

But I do like the idea of parental lock, though it shouldn't just lock the changing of the rating, but also if the rating was set anything but PG it should also downgrade the rating and lock it in place as PG

and to help parents spy on their kids (since they don't feel like taking care of them when they need), when the unlocking password is entered wrong, it should be stored on a encrypted log (that if edited, erased or replaced with somtyhing other than the true log will be made clear that it was tampered with), optionally sending an email to an email address set by the parent, and next time the password is entered correctly if the log got any entries since it was last locked it should be brought up and displayed, showing account used, date, time and any other info that might be useful

actually, since the whole main grid is supposed to be forbidden for minors, why not simply deny login without a password? <.<

There is a fundamental problem between verification and anonymity. You cannot at the same time prove who you are and remain anonymous, unless you use a trusted third party verification service.

In other words, you as a privacy minded person registers with the verification service and sufficiently proves your age, or whatever credentials are required. You do not tell them why you are registering. They give you a registration number.

Then you go to second life, and give that registration number, which they can then use to verify your status without giving Linden Labs your real name. That way neither end can connect your name with your activities.
